Charles was ball gunner, not a nice place, even for the smallest member of the crew, since the ball turret was so cramped. Consolidated Liberator Mk VI EW114
“S”,on her 6th mission took off from Salbani airfield in West Bengal, India on a daylght raid on the Maymyo Railway Station in Burma. Over the target area
according to operational records EW114, the 356 Sqdn B-24, was flying No 5 in the second box when it skidded in a turn and collided with EV902, the 355 Sqdn
Liberator, who was flying No 7. The tailpiece of EW114 and half of mainplane of EV902 were severed. Both aircraft crashed at 21.34N:95.09E, killing all crew
members on EW114 (Charles' aircraft) and 8 of the 11 crewman aboard EV902 "Z" . Three of that crew bailed out, were captured by the Japanese and survived the
war in Rangoon jail. Charles was buried in Meiktila War Cemetery (Christian) and moved after the war to Taukkyan War Cemetery |
